It all started with a simple question: “Can you film a video podcast in several cities across Romania while maintaining the same production quality?” That was the challenge from McCann Health, and since it wasn’t our first time working in a mobile format, we knew exactly what to do: from rental spaces to portable lighting and set design, every detail mattered. That’s how the idea came to share our experience — because we know that more and more creators and brands are looking for mobile, efficient, and reliable solutions for their productions.
- Choosing the right location
The location significantly influences the perceived quality of a video podcast. Beyond the visual aspect, you must ensure that the space offers the necessary technical conditions.

Essential aspects to check:
- Enough space for set design and equipment
- Easy car access for unloading
- Stable power supply
- Possibility of sound isolation
- Controllable or fully eliminable natural light
We prefer to work in rented photo studios in each city — because they are predictable, well-equipped, and provide full control over the filming environment.
- Detailed planning of the filming days
For this type of production, a full day is reserved exclusively for equipment setup and technical tests. No matter how organized you are, mobility always brings variables, and planning must anticipate them.
What we consider for each project:
- Sound and image tests in the actual setup
- Flexibility in schedule in case of reshoots
- Preparing a fully functional setup before the main filming day
- Modular and easily transportable set design
We developed a simple, visually coherent set that fits into a single vehicle along with the equipment. It assembles quickly and ensures consistency from one location to another. This solution allows us to maintain the same visual tone, regardless of the filming space.

- Choosing the right equipment
What we use in our productions:
- Sony FX6 – a professional camera with cinematic image quality, extended dynamic range, and excellent exposure control, ideal for multiple interviews in controlled environments.
- Sony G Master lenses – provide clarity across the focal range and excellent subject-background separation, essential in compact spaces.
- Sennheiser lavaliers and boom microphone – for clean sound, natural frequencies, and optimized voice capture.
- Atomos Sumo (director’s monitor) – allows live control of all cameras and a fast pre-edit, significantly reducing final editing time and ensuring no key shots are missing.
Alternative solutions for lower budgets:
For those just starting out or working with a limited budget, consider:
- Sony Alpha A7III – a versatile mirrorless camera, great in low light, with professional video profiles
- Fixed lenses f/1.8 – ideal for depth-of-field control
- External audio recorder + entry-level lavalier – for dedicated sound capture
Limitations of these setups: no live monitoring, reduced battery life, and a more complex post-production workflow.
- Live pre-editing for efficiency and control
A live direction setup (such as Atomos Sumo) not only reduces editing time but also improves the quality of the final deliverable. Through pre-editing directly on location, we can monitor frame synchronization, sound quality, and ensure that no raw footage is missing.
This step becomes crucial especially when working in different cities, without the possibility of an additional filming session.
- Operational safety: redundancy and backup
Nothing is riskier in a mobile shoot than not having a backup plan. Each session involves:
- Backup equipment (cameras, cables, power sources)
- Multiple cards and dual recording
- Technical check-ins before each take
- Duplicated audio on separate sources
This redundancy has saved us many times in productions where there was no room for a “second filming day.”
- High quality, regardless of budget
A professional-looking video podcast doesn’t necessarily require a big budget — just efficient planning and a balanced approach between image, sound, and content.
We encourage beginners to experiment with as many space, lighting, and capture setups as possible. Repeated tests in different contexts help define your own “recipe for success” and understand the ideal equipment setup.
Our conclusion
Building a mobile studio is not just about portability, but also about consistency, clarity, and control. Every element — from the set and camera to sound and workflow — must work together seamlessly.
